What is Caffeine

Caffeine works by inhibiting the adenosine receptors in the brain. Adenosine is the molecule in the brain the makes you feel tired. Which is why caffeine gives people the feeling of wakefulness. Caffeine has also been shown to increase the dopamine receptors in the brain which is responsible invoking that motivation and drive.

Flow state

Caffeine has been shown to put people in what’s called the “flow state”. This is a mental state in which a person is completely focused on a single task or activity. They are directing all of their attention toward the task, and they do not experience many thoughts about themselves or their performance. Some people refer to this informally as being “in the zone.”

Coffee Commandment 1

Wait 60-90 minutes before consuming caffeine upon wakening. Your adenosine receptors aren’t awake until around an hour to an hour and a half of waking. This means you are losing out on a lot of the benefits of caffeine if you are taking it immediately upon waking.

Tip #1 - Bullet Proof Coffee
Combing your coffee with a fat such as butter or MCT oils is an effective way to give your brain the essential fuel it needs to operate more efficiently.

Coffee Commandment 2

Take one day off a week and one week off a quarter. Overtime we build a tolerance to caffeine and taking everyday without breaks will lessen the effects we feel from it. Instead following this break schedule will allow our brain to re sensitize our adenosine and dopamine receptors.

Coffee Commandment 3

Take 50% more if you are sleep deprived. If you normally have 1 cup of coffee in the morning, take 1 ½ if you are sleep deprived. This should only be used when you really need it, but can help bring you to baseline when sleep deprived.

Coffee Commandment 4

Don’t take caffeine more than 10-12 hours before bed. The half live of caffeine is around 12 hours so making sure you time your caffeine dose approximately is important for ensuring you get optimal sleep.

Tip #2
Adding L-Theanine to your coffee is a great way to counter the anxiety and jitter effects from coffee providing a more focused feeling.
